What began as a routine lunch and learn meeting at Wells Insurance quickly became a moment Greg Gibson will not soon forget.

On August 19, colleagues gathered for what appeared to be an ordinary meeting. Then Roy Watson Jr., Vice President of Sales and Distribution for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, arrived with a surprise announcement.

Greg had been selected as the newest inductee into the Blue Cross NC Producer Hall of Fame.

The surprise brought together Greg's family, his colleagues at Wells Insurance, and members of the Blue Cross NC team to celebrate a career spanning more than three decades and a professional relationship with Blue Cross that began long before Greg joined Wells.

A Career in Employee Benefits That Began at Blue Cross

Greg's connection to Blue Cross dates back to 1989, when he joined the organization as a group sales representative. He later moved into a sales management role, helping develop the sales team and build relationships throughout the industry.

In 1996, Greg joined Wells Insurance, where he helped build the agency's Employee Benefits department. Over the years, he has worked with employers throughout eastern North Carolina, helping them navigate the changing landscape of employee benefits and healthcare costs.

But according to Roy, Greg's career has always been defined by more than the business he has produced.

Roy first met Greg in the 1990s, when both were working in sales for Blue Cross NC in different North Carolina markets.

What stood out then has remained true decades later.

"Just a nice guy that you could come up and talk to. Genuine, is what I remember about him back then," Roy said. "And then as we've gone through the years of knowing each other, the same guy from back then to today has not changed. He has been consistent, which is a good thing."

Built on Relationships

Throughout his career, Greg has built relationships with clients, colleagues, and carrier partners by approaching each interaction with a genuine interest in helping people.

Roy described Greg as someone who consistently looks beyond the immediate question to understand what else may be affecting a client's business or Employee Benefits program.

"He's always wanting to do the right thing by his customers, by his clients," Roy said. "Always trying to find, 'Is there something else we can do with this renewal? Is there something else we can figure out for them?'"

He also pointed to Greg's willingness to share information and collaborate with others throughout the industry.

"Whenever something was going on, we were looking for something competitive to understand what's happening in the market, he was always willing to share," Roy said. "He wanted us to be our best so that he could be his best for his customers."

According to Roy, one of Greg's greatest strengths has been his ability to help employers understand what is happening around them during periods of change.

The Employee Benefits landscape has evolved significantly throughout Greg's career. Healthcare costs, plan designs, regulations, and employee expectations have all changed. Helping employers understand those changes and consider their options has remained an important part of his work.

"I think Greg has done a very good job of keeping his customers attuned to what's going on in the industry," Roy said. "His impact has been his ability to keep those customers calm and attuned to understanding what's taking place and helping them understand what the long-term propositions are for their healthcare dollars."

What the Blue Cross NC Producer Hall of Fame Represents

The Blue Cross NC Producer Hall of Fame recognizes more than professional performance.

According to Roy, the selection process considers a producer's impact on the community, relationships with customers, reputation among industry peers, and the way they represent Blue Cross NC in the marketplace.

Greg's longstanding relationship with Blue Cross and his approach to serving clients made him a natural choice for the honor.

"He's been a loyal Blue Cross advocate forever," Roy said. "I think that consistency and that commitment...that's the legacy of his career."

For Roy, who has known Greg for decades as both a colleague and a friend, the opportunity to present the award was particularly meaningful.

"When we talked about who was going to be inducted this year, I was extremely excited," Roy said. "Definitely Greg would be high on my list of persons to induct into the Hall of Fame. So I was extremely excited about the opportunity to be here to present. I wouldn't have missed it."

A Surprise Worth Sharing

Blue Cross NC typically recognizes Hall of Fame inductees during its producer summit. For Greg's induction, the organization chose a different approach.

Rather than recognizing him at a large industry event, Blue Cross NC brought the celebration to Wells Insurance, allowing Greg's family, colleagues, and longtime partners to be part of the moment.

The surprise worked.

"I was not expecting it. It was a total surprise," Greg said.

When it came time to reflect on the recognition, however, Greg was quick to recognize the people who had been part of his journey.

"I didn't do it alone," he said. "I've had a team for 30 years that's been behind me. Some of them have been here almost the whole 30 years with me, and I couldn't have done it by myself."

That may be the most fitting reflection of the moment.

A career is measured in years, but its impact is often reflected in the relationships built along the way.

For more than three decades, Greg has built those relationships with employers, colleagues, carrier partners, and his community.

His induction into the Blue Cross NC Producer Hall of Fame is a recognition of that lasting impact.

Congratulations to Greg on this well-deserved honor. Wells Insurance is proud to celebrate this milestone with him and grateful to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina for making the occasion such a meaningful one.
