Founding Roots in Wilmington

 Harold W. Wells & Son, Inc. is established on Princess Street in Wilmington, NC, laying the foundation for a family-led insurance agency committed to serving the local community. 

1930s

A Tradition of Leadership Begins

 Harold W. Wells Jr. joins his father’s firm, marking the start of a multi-generational legacy. His dedication and leadership help shape the agency’s values and direction for decades. 

1970s

Third Generation Takes the Helm

 Harold III and Calvin Wells become managing principals, steering the agency through a period of growth and transition. The firm moves to its current headquarters at One North 3rd Street in downtown Wilmington, signaling a new era of expansion. 

1990s

Regional Expansion

 Wells Insurance grows from a local agency to a regional presence, adding new locations in Southport and Myrtle Beach. This expansion reflects the firm’s commitment to broader service and innovation. 

1999

Welcoming the Fourth Generation

 Harold (Hal) Wells IV joins the firm, continuing the Wells family tradition and bringing fresh perspective to the agency’s leadership. 

2001

Downtown Expansion

The agency acquires an adjacent building at 5 N 3rd St, expanding its Personal Insurance and Employee Benefits offices. This strategic move enhances service offerings and supports continued growth.

Innovation in Health Plan Design

A New Brand Identity

The agency unveils its new brand, “Wells Insurance,” reflecting a modern structure and renewed focus on client needs and industry leadership.

2012

Wells Insurance becomes an Assurex Global Partner firm, one of only 107 worldwide. With collective revenue of $2.8 Billion, over 19,000 employees, and 620 offices, Assurex Global ranks as number one on the largest privately owned brokers list*. (*Companies that derive more than 49% of revenue from personal lines are not ranked.)

2016

Wrightsville Beach Marine Building Opens

 The agency launches Wells Marine Insurance at Wrightsville Beach, expanding its specialized offerings and strengthening its coastal presence. 

2017

A new branch office opens at 5712 Oleander Drive, further extending Wells Insurance’s reach and accessibility in the Wilmington area.

2022

Leland Branch Launch

 Wells Insurance opens its Leland Branch in Brunswick Forest Welcome Center, continuing its tradition of growth and community engagement. 

2023

Board Leadership and Global Impact

 Hal Wells is elected to the Board of Directors for Assurex Global during the Global Conference in Rome, Italy. This milestone highlights Wells Insurance’s influence in the world’s largest privately held insurance brokerage group, operating as an exclusive partnership with over 100 respected global broker members.

Plastic Ocean Project Cleanup

An environmental cleanup effort where Wells volunteers partnered with Plastic Ocean Project to remove debris along Hwy 421—preventing trash from entering the Cape Fear River and local marshes. Together, the team collected 429 pounds of waste, contributing to the Trees 4 Trash initiative and supporting healthier coastal waterways.

Surfers Healing – Wrightsville Beach

Wells volunteers joined Surfers Healing, the original surf camp for children with autism, to help provide therapeutic surf experiences in Wrightsville Beach. Each year, professional surfers and local volunteers create a safe, joyful environment where kids gain confidence, connection, and the simple happiness of riding a wave.

Corporate Cup: Supporting The Carousel Center

During this year’s Corporate Cup competition, Wells employees rallied together to raise $2,025 for The Carousel Center—supporting hope, healing, and safety for children in our community. From “Be the Change” jars to team donations, the week showcased our commitment to giving back where it matters most.

Movers for Moms Donation Drive

Wells partners with Two Men and a Truck each year for the Movers for Moms campaign, collecting essential items for women in crisis. Donations from our offices help support the local Domestic Violence Shelter, providing comfort and care for mothers and women in need during Mother’s Day and beyond.

Helene Flood Recovery Effort

Wells Commercial Account Executive Truett Booth joined a volunteer crew in Western NC to support ongoing Helene flood recovery—repairing homes, completing carpentry projects, and building a fully operational 50-foot bridge for a Vietnam veteran and his wife. The work, funded entirely by local individuals and businesses, restored safe access to their home and reinforced the power of community support.

Wrightsville Beach Sweep

The Wells Volunteer Team headed to Wrightsville Beach for a shoreline cleanup, collecting single-use plastics, cigarette debris, and even abandoned gear. Our Communications, Accounting, and IT teams worked together to help protect the coast we call home and keep our local beaches healthier for everyone.

Toys for Tots Holiday Drive

Wells employees came together during the holidays to support Toys for Tots, filling five boxes with gifts for children in need. The Marine-run program brings joy to economically disadvantaged families and strengthens communities through its annual toy collection and distribution efforts.
